So I got a new toy.
Earlier today I mentioned to Pepper that I was thinking of getting a Flip UltraHD for video and she brought up the Sony Bloggie Touch
. After comparing them and a few similar brands I decided on the Bloggie.
Here’s just a quick test video shot in 720p at 60 frames per second. While not really what I associate with HD quality, it doesn’t look bad panning around my backyard.
It’s about sixteen million degrees outside, give or take, and the concrete is scorching. I just barely touched it with my bare feet and I swear I saw smoke. I have no idea how my Maltese could lay on it!
The Bloggie also has the ability to capture still photographs up to 12MP which makes it a good option for a point and shoot too. The still camera part is a bit difficult to operate, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Below are two test shots with the camera completely unedited except for cropping. Not bad!

I ordered a Flexible Gorillapod from Amazon which is supposed to get to me in about a week and that should make vlogging a bit easier.
I’m sure you’ll hear a lot more about whether I love or hate the Bloggie as I use it more! (Now I just wish I had a better computer to process videos!)
Do you have a video recorder? If so, which one and do you like it?

The thirst for better tech is insatiable
Quality looks pretty good, but bit of a shame the zoom is via button and not a scroll or tilt button.

The zoom isn’t via a button, it’s a touch scroll on the screen, I guess it’s just choppy.

Ahh ok, that makes sense. I thought it must have been a button
The quality seems pretty good for a pocket cam and i see there is a 3d version out now too.
I’ve got a Sony HDR-CX100 handycam which does the job for me. Bought it when these smaller flip cams were just starting to come out here in Australia. It’s nice to use and produces alright video but I’d probably reconsider if I had my time again.
Does your bloggie take standard SD cards or did you have to buy a memory stick pro? Or is the internal memory enough?
Twitter: @PhotoLynda
Not sure if the internal memory is enough yet. There’s a 4 and 8GB version and I bought the 4GB one. I think it might take a card (proprietary if anything) so it can be ‘expanded’ with a larger card but not sure about that.
The quality is actually really good. I told it to play the “HD” version on my site, but I’m not sure it is. Playing the HD version from YouTube looks a lot nicer than I originally thought.
My laptop is borked, so proper video playback on it is impossible. It’s going to make editing videos a real treat.
Twitter: @PhotoLynda
That’s to say proper playback of the video straight from the hard-drive doesn’t work for some reason. I can view YouTube videos fine. Not sure why.
Twitter: @jkohlbach
Yeah, youtube’s embedded video has to a certain size to play the HD version, unless you use their older controller. Bit of technical wizardry required there..
Re the harddrive playback, sounds like you’re missing some codecs.
Twitter: @PhotoLynda
Yep, it’s a codec issue. Something’s wonky with this computer. My husband’s tried correcting the issue and I can’t pretend to know why it didn’t work, but he knows what he’s doing and couldn’t fix it.
I obviously need a new laptop now!

I had a flip cam but it died a few months back. Which I guess is for the best since it is no longer being made by the company. Been looking for a suitable replacement so I appreciate you shooting the video. I’ll looking into getting one of these.

My first “real” video with the Bloggie is coming up on The SITS Girls on Friday. I’m really happy with the sound and picture quality, though when you’re handholding it’s easy to cover the mic with your finger.
The bloggie seems to be a high quality video recorder. I have a Flip myself and it doesn’t seem to be as of the same quality as the Bloggie, even though it’s HD. I’d say you made the right decision!
