Scavenger Hunt Sunday is weekly photography scavenger hunt. Five themes and/or techniques are presented by the inspiring Ashley Sisk and you have a week to capture it. Taking photos with the hunt items in mind is incredibly challenging. It’s a little bit like work, but that’s what’s good about it. In order to grow as a photographer, one must leave their comfort zone and push their limits. If it’s hard to take five themed photos in one week, then this is a great way to expand your skills!
The five items for last week are: 1) Classic Still Life. 2) Self-Portrait. 3) On the Floor. 4) Lines. 5) Fresh.
Classic Still Life
I’m not sure how classic this is. We went to Mark’s parents’ house on Saturday. I found myself itching to take photos of something, but had no clue what. My mother-in-law collects teapots and has some really gorgeous pieces! So I pulled them off the wall, lined them up and started clicking. The boys were in another room luckily or one of these may have found itself broken!

Self-Portrait
On Sunday, we went to the Scarborough Faire where I played mom of the year by taking my boys through a haunted castle and the wildest ride on the grounds. My youngest son hated both, though in my defense the haunted castle was just a pitch black maze with deafening pops going off every few hundred feet. Not very scary at all, but extremely startling and unsettling. My older son didn’t like the castle either, but he’s so proud of himself for making it through. “I made it through the castle!” he’s said frequently since.
The hit of the day was face painting! I realized after the faire I should’ve gotten my face painted too! That would have made for a cool self portrait. Alas.

On the Floor
Here’s the picture I took for this theme because I thought it was “on the ground”. I was sitting on the ground to take this shot. Originally I was trying to get the back of my son’s head. He was watching the “show” his daddy was putting on by batting a ball out into the yard while his younger brother retrieved it. Then he turned around and started posing! I got tons of faces: contemplative, frowning and even a kissy face! All without prompting.

I don’t know where this posing thing is coming from, but he frequently tells me to take a picture of him doing something. It started with this the other day (he gave me plenty of time to snap, but I still didn’t get it the way I wanted it!)

After contemplating the theme further, I think maybe this photo I took at my in-laws’ on Saturday may be a better match. (I couldn’t resist sharing my little poser though.)

I took it for the low color contrast. While it’s a bed of greens, it isn’t really “On the Floor”. Oh well.
Lines
I struggled with this theme for some reason. I don’t know why; there are lines everywhere. I saw this on the ride home Saturday and thought the lines were cool, but I would prefer taking a picture of this while neither of us are moving.

Fresh
Sometime over the winter, my rose bush nearly died. We thought it was done for, but lo and behold the brown leaves and sticks started turning green and buds developed! Now my little bush has a fresh bloom and two more on the way! It’s such a testament to life’s strength and persistence!

I’m happy with how well exposed I got this straight out of the camera, though I did decide to crop it. Hover over the photo above or click to view the SOOC and shot specs.

She must participate in the 52 weeks of 2011 group on flickr, because classic still life was our theme for last week and HOT HOT HOT is our theme for this week. I did not like classic still life as a theme – it limits your aesthetic and make is difficult for have creative interpretations. I’m looking forward to HOT HOT HOT.

How interesting! I am part of that group, but haven’t participated in so long I head no idea the themes were matching up.

So I definitely love your self portrait – you should have gotten your face painted too…that would have been awesome. And I love lines as well. Oh wait, I also love the second on the floor shot. That angle works for anyone!

Yeah – I kicked myself when we got home for not getting my face painted.
Oh well, next time I will remember!
Thanks Ashley!

These are so fun. I didn’t do the hunt this weekend, but hope to be back in the game soon.
I love the one of the two of you together.

Thank you so much Julie! I was almost not going to post the Lines shot because I wished I was able to get a different perspective on it. Now I’m glad I posted it!

My daughter used to smile for the camera any time it was pulled out. I have to work a little harder these days. I love that posed shot!

I came over from the SITS forum. I love your elevator pitch! I like the words “inspire” and “challenge.” It makes me think that it’s not going to just be a bunch of technical jargon and that it’s really going to inspire to action. (I just got my first DSLR last week, so this topic definitely interests me!)
