Reflections are frequently a part of self-portraits. It’s easy for a photographer to catch a glimpse of themselves and take a shot in a reflection. Let’s get this straight: setting up the tripod, digging out the remote shutter or trying to hold a one-plus pound camera at arms length while blindly focusing is not easy.
The ideas for shooting your own reflection are limited only by the number of reflective surfaces on the planet at any given moment in time.
Finding Reflections
Any mirror will do, but so will a building, sculpture, window, doorknob, ornament, light fixture, sunglasses or even an eyeball. Here are some of my previous reflective self-portraits of which I’m most fond.
This Week’s Shots
As usual, my grand plans fell by the wayside. I wanted to get out and about with the family to see what sort of reflective surfaces I’d find, but we were iced in from Monday night until Saturday morning. At first, I was just going to settle of this shot taken of me at our backdoor as the boys played in the snow Saturday morning.
Then last night I was giving my boys a bath and noticed that we were all reflected in the spigot. I’m kicking myself for not calling out to my husband to bring me my camera. I was going to hold off on this week’s post until I could get that shot, but as I was editing photos from a “Mood” shoot I did for Faith’s Simplicity SLR Photography Class, I came across my reflection unexpectedly and decided to use this one instead.
Yes, I know I’m probably crazy for taking my camera into the bathtub with me, but it was only for a few shots and I was super careful!
Join in the Fun!

Pepper over at Pepper Scraps and Uniquehorn Designs is teaming up with me for a FULL YEAR to complete Project 52: Self-Portraits. To make this more fun, we’ve decided to invite you to visit our blogs each week to link up your self portraits!
Every Monday we’ll share our self-portraits and ask you do the same. To get your creative juices flowing there is an optional theme Pepper and I will adhere to and you’re welcome to as well. Here’s the schedule for February:
1/31: Silly Faces- 2/7: Reflections
- 2/14: Love
- 2/21: Favorite Feature
There are only two rules:
- You should share a recently taken self-portrait
- The link should be the absolute URL of your photo or entry, not a link to your homepage. Links to Flickr pages are fine!
If you want to share a link or this awesome graphic Pepper created, that would be awesome. You don’t even need to be participating in Project 52 or have a shot that reflects the weekly theme, but I hope you’ll be motivated to do both!
Link up this week over on Pepper’s post!
