Happy Valentine’s Day! Everywhere you look this week there’s candy, hearts, pink and red!
This week’s Project 52 suggested Self-Portrait theme is Love. Every Monday, Pepper and I are hosting a self-portrait link-up. It hasn’t received a lot of attention so far, but we really hope we’ll motivate you to get out from behind the camera and capture yourself. What better way to show your love for yourself and preservation of your full family history than to take a self-portrait?
You don’t need to participate in Project 52 or even the weekly theme to link up.
There are only two rules:
- You should share a recently taken self-portrait
- The link should be the absolute URL of your photo or entry, not a link to your homepage. Links to Flickr pages are fine!
My Efforts This Week
Every week I want to get a photo with my kids, but my fear of setting up the tripod only to have one of them escape from me and knock it over leaves me too paralyzed to even try something other than arm’s length with them.
Instead, I stole their candy hearts and dumped them onto my husband’s work desk into a shape vaguely resembling a heart. I set my focus, exposure and used my remote shutter to fire off a few shots until I got one that didn’t look so terrible.
Focusing for self-portraits seems terribly complicated. Am I missing something? To get my multiple me silly faces portrait, I put a stuffed animal in the chair where I was going to sit to focus. For this shot, I set a bottle on the edge of the desk touching the wall and focused on it. Somehow I doubt autofocus will work with these types of shots. If you have any tips, I would love them!
Since this week’s Love That Shot link-up is also love, I’m entering this photo in their link-up too. It isn’t often I can adhere to others’ themes! Check them out as they’ve recently relaunched their website. I’m hoping to get a membership again soon, especially now that they have new workshops coming out!
Share Yours!
Have you recently taken a self-portrait? If so, add a link to it here! If not, why not challenge yourself to take a self-portrait symbolizing Love and come back here to share it?

This looks great! I couldn’t find those candy hearts anywhere here
I need to get in front of the camera more

Thanks Michelle! I love it when people post self-portraits. It’s always cool to see the face behind the lens.
Hi Lynda~ Have you ever tried BBF (back button focus) for your self-portrait shots? You were mentioning focusing issues, so I wondered if that might help you? I think the general idea is that it seperates the focus from the act of the shutter closing. Once you lock focus in a certain spot, it stays there. I think you’re very very good with techical information (I’m so not!!!), so maybe if you googled it, you’d be able to figure it out. I’m more fly by the seat of my pants…and I don’t really know how to explain it in more detail. If you’re interested, I can email a friend that did a post on it, and I could send you the link. I was a bit confused by the whole thing…but I’m not very smart with the technical. LOL! I haven’t done any self-portraits (although I keep swearing I will)…and I think that’s a good time to use BBF. For me, I haven’t used it that much. Your shot is gorgeous and creative – I love it!

Karli, I haven’t heard of BBF before. I usually focus and then set the camera/lens to manual focus to “lock” it in. I will Google it and see if my ancient camera has such a feature.
Thank you! Please do a self portrait soon – I’d love to see you!

I finally made it!! Ugh, and my photo is no where as lovely as yours (no pun intended LOL). I love what you did it’s awesome!! And what a good use of conversation hearts, way better than eating them!

Thanks – yes, I can’t stand eating conversation hearts. LOL. I tried a broken one just to see if I was missing out on something. Not really.
(I’ll take chocolate any day over pressed sugar!)
By the way, I think my comments to your blog are getting caught up in spam.

Thanks I had a few caught in there, gotta hate that!

I usually take self-portraits when I think I’ve done my makeup well for the day. Any other pics of me are taken by my husband since he is the pro photog in this house. Heehee.
Your self-portrait is adorable and very creartive. Well done! Now to figure out how to do one of myself that isn’t off the point and shoot. Haha.
Thanks for stopping by my blog! It’s a pleasure to meet you!

Thank you!
It’s great your husband takes photos of you. I think it’s just most important that photos of them exist, especially shots of them with their family.

I LOVE IT! I need to force myself in front of the camera a little more often. I keep saying that I will (as soon as I lose X more pounds) *laughs*

Thanks! I am definitely forcing myself with this project.
