I’d like to think that everyone has a favorite feature: something they love about themselves. As Ray Stevens wrote and performed, everything is beautiful in its own way. Therefore, it should be easy to take a picture of yourself representing or including your favorite feature.
That’s the theme for this week’s Project 52 Self-Portrait challenge. Pepper and I are in this project together this year to document and inspire ourselves. To make it more fun (or insanely complex) we assigned ourselves weekly themes and invite you to join in with us. It could be for just one week, several or the remainder of the year.
We’ve received a lot of feedback that this is a cool idea, but people aren’t picking up their cameras for self-portraits. Why not? Stop saying that you need to take more pictures of yourself and take more pictures of yourself!
Pepper is hosting the link-up this week. Please go visit her and share your self-portrait! We have only two rules (so tiny I’m going to write them in small text):
My Favorite Feature
I have two favorite features: my eyes and my hair. My hair is prone to not cooperate based on things like the humidity, solar flares and planet alignment so I wasn’t able to capture it behaving yesterday.
Unlike my curls, my eyes are likely something my children will not inherit from me. My oldest boy has amazing curls and my 20 month old boy is just starting to get enough hair to curl up. Both have their father’s brown eyes. I’m not interested in continuing to spit out kids to see if my husband has a recessive gene, so I’ve accepted any future children will be brown eyed beauties as well.
My mother has gorgeous green eyes and though I’ve never met my father I’m told he has brown eyes. Somehow that combination resulted in my blue eyes. My left eye has a fleck of brown in it, approximating clock hands reading 10:30.
What’s Your Favorite Feature?
I implore you, please take a photo of your favorite feature and link up with Pepper this week!
If you want to join in with our project every week, we’d be delighted! We announce the themes way in advance so you can start thinking about and planning your shots! Here are the themes for March:
- 2/28: Raw (or unedited)
- 3/7: Hidden
- 3/14: Being Green (This is my birthday! But also the week of St. Patrick’s!)
- 3/21: Past & Present
It’s not just for the sake of our little linky that I want you to pick up the camera and capture who you are. Do it for yourself. Do it for your family. Do it for your creativity! But seriously, just do it and link up to us, mmmkay!?

Wow you did such a great job catching the color of your eyes! I love the brown fleck!
One of my boys got his daddy’s blue eyes and one got my brown eyes with the rings of green. His are dark, but it seems as I get older my eyes get lighter which is supposed to impossible but who knows.
I love eyes they are just amazing!

Thank you!
Your eyes are gorgeous Pepper – I meant to tell you that on your post (but I was typing on my iPhone and getting frustrated).
Scientists are discovering more and more about eye color lately. Turns out the dominant-recessive traits we thought we knew don’t actually function quite that way. I’ve known people whose eye color continually changes throughout their life. Sometimes even day to day!
