Fog exudes other-worldliness, surrealism and mood. It can be scary or peaceful. It hides part of our world and brings another part, usually ignored, to life. Without question, it is beautiful and makes for a breathtaking photograph.
Welcome to the NEW Friday Finds!
Starting this week I’m changing up Friday Finds a little bit. Instead of presenting you with a list of random links I will concentrate on the Friday Finds theme. One of the reasons I started Friday Finds was to help inspire my own photography and learn from others. Collecting gorgeous photographs through Flickr Galleries to present each week helps me do this partly, but researching how to achieve such awesomeness will take it to another level.
I hope you’ll join me each week to learn with me and challenge yourselves to try new things or improve your skills! Please meet over in the Friday Finds Flickr Group to take inspiration in photos being added to the pool throughout the week which match the theme. Then return here on Friday for a collection of links and videos which will help you take such photos!
Shooting Fog
Fog is a scientific phenomena forming clouds close to the ground in humid areas when the temperature approaches the dew point. The dew point is not an exact value, rather it’s a measurement of atmospheric moisture. Fog usually hangs around from the early evening to early morning and is most prevalent near bodies of water or moist areas.
How to Take Photos in Fog, Mist or Haze
This tutorial gives some additional information about the science of fog, how it affects light, what it can best capture and maybe most importantly, the secret magic trick to getting your foggy photographs to turn out the way your eye sees the scene.
Exploring with a Camera: Fog
How can fog be used artistically in your photography? In her weekly blog series, Kat Sloma answers this question and shares inspiring examples to demonstrate the different effects you can capture with fog.
Photography for Beginners: Shooting Fog
This article contains some great tips and personal anecdotes of one photographer’s quest to get fog on film.
Fog Photography: The Basics
A quick read with stunning examples to get you primed and ready to shoot fog! Why do fog shots usually come out so dark and how do you capture contrast? This article answers that and more.
Enshrouded in Fog: Tips on Capturing that Soft and Subtle Light
This is a more advanced look at shooting for and discusses many of the typical problems and how to overcome them. It’s also the only article I’ve seen so far mention using the digital darkroom to aid in getting great fog photos!
Video Instruction and Inspiration
National Geographic photographer Bob Krist quickly teaches about the different types of fog and how to set the exposure to best capture it. This is a good starting point! Please note, the video requires you to watch a 30 second commercial before the content starts. Small price to pay, I say!
PhotoNetworx takes you out into the field to shoot fog, shows the photographic results and provides instruction for setting up your shot along with tips to get the images you’re trying to produce!
If you aren’t able to capture fog straight out of the camera, but feel your photograph would benefit from a foggy or misty look, Gavin of Gavtrain shares a super simple and fast tip to create both fog and mist in post processing.
Here are two musical photo slideshows of fog collections. The addition of music makes the shots especially moody!
More Beautiful Fog Shots
This week there were 74 foggy submissions to the Flick Friday Finds Pool. Please take a moment to look through all the shots submitted below. I would also like to encourage you to pick your favorite shots and post them to this week’s Fog Favorites discussion thread. Try your hand at creating a Flickr gallery and curate all your own favorite fog shots, whether or not they were submitted to the Friday Finds pool!
The photographs I’ve chosen to highlight throughout this entry are part of an 18 photo Flick gallery of my favorite fog submissions this week. Please visit Friday Finds Fog Gallery to view all 18 along with an explanation of why I selected each shot!
The Next Theme Is: Night Photography!
Like fog, night photography is moody and tricky to capture. It almost always requires longer exposures and a tripod. I adore star trails and was originally going to limit the theme to those, but I feel exploring all aspects of night photography will be more beneficial.
To participate, join the Flickr Friday Finds Group if you haven’t already and add up to five submissions. You can tag them dwcff-night or I will tag them for you. That’s it!
Please let me know if you’ve enjoyed the new format, if you have any theme suggestions or any other general comments. I love receiving feedback! Also, please stop by my Facebook fan page and click “Like” to stay in touch with me on Facebook!
