It takes me a couple of days to figure out whether or not I like a photo I’ve taken and I can state unequivocally that I do not like the photo I took for the first week of Shoot and Edit. Next week’s theme is “good morning” so I’m hoping my love of coffee and early days help me out there.
Here’s my SOOC shot from Tuesday:
Before I read Ashley’s post on editing I wanted to try to edit the photo myself and came up with the photo on the right. You can mouse over it to see the original.
I started in Adobe Camera Raw where I pumped up the Recovery (primarily to try to darken that bright bright sky a bit) and upped the blacks. In Photoshop, I ran MCP’s Magical Clarity, which I run on just about all my photos. I really love it! Then I warmed it up a tad with Patti Brown’s Sun Shower overlay and finished with Patti Brown’s Supernatural Collection Fantasy Glow.
I followed Ashley’s workflow to see how the results would impact my photo. I learned lots of great techniques I can’t wait to apply in the future. Using Photoshops Filter > Other > High Pass Filter as described in the tutorial gives a result very similar result to MCP’s Magical Clarity. It’s a really quick and easy way to punch up your photos! I also finished with the Lux action since I have it. I didn’t think I’d like it enough to keep it in my second edit, but I do! (Still not enough to like the photograph, mind you!)
Here’s the photo edited with Ashley’s workflow. Mouseover it to see the original.
Since I don’t want to leave you with a bunch of bare tree photos that barely represent winter, I’ll end this entry with the one photograph I was able to get of the very fleeting snow here in Texas earlier this week. Nothing accumulated, though it’s gotten quite chilly here. All I was able to capture were some snow flurries.
I can’t wait to see what you’ve put together this week!

Beautiful edit! xo

I love how you walked us through the evolution of your photo. Although I like your first edit, I’m really liking what you did after following my steps (maybe I’m biased). I don’t think the shot is boring at all. Maybe a little abstract, but I like that.

Thanks Ashley! LOL.
I love those snow flurries. I think I need to try to capture some myself.

Thanks! I love snow flurry shots.

I love tree shots and I think your edit has done a great job with the sooc. That sky is so much better now. Over here in Scotland at this time of year our skies are always non discript – grey and dreek so how you transformed the sky really interested me.

I actually like the edit you did on your own over the 2nd one! It’s a little more yellow and ‘warm’, which doesn’t really fit the theme of ‘winter’.
The 2nd edit has a bit more ragged edges to the bark of the tree which almost looks like frost. Very wintery!

Thank you Lauren!
Very lovely edit, both yours and the one using Ashley’s. And I love the snow pic you left out with!

LOL. Thank you! I learned the mouseover trick from Pioneer Woman.
