Friday Finds: Self-Portraits

This was an incredibly inspiring week for me looking through all the self portrait submissions to the Friday Finds Flickr pool. I found some people who seemed to rarely do self-portraits and others who do daily self-portraits and get incredibly creative with the shots.

I especially like the “multiple me” style of self-portrait. I’m eager to try something like this!

There were a number of shots where the photographer is shown with their camera and honestly, I loved them all. It’s neat to see photographers “doing what they do”. Hint: From my site, you can look through the entire gallery of these photos by clicking on the first shot using the navigation options.

I found the photos that spoke to me the most were the ones where the photographer took some time to conceptualize and execute the shot. I’m not sure I have this level of creativity in me, but a good first step is to absorb awesome work like the self-portraits I chose for this week’s Friday Finds Self-Portraits Gallery. I’d like to invite everyone to create your own gallery of self portraits on Flickr or share a few of your favorite self-portrait submissions on this week’s Flickr discussion thread.

This Week’s Photography & Photo Editing Links

  • The Ultimate Exposure Computer – This is a long document I’ve been reading over the past couple of days. It discusses at length how aperture, ISO and shutter speed work and promise to help you expose a shot with no input from your light meter.
  • Photography and the Law – A great reminder of your rights as a photographer, plus some tips for how to handle the situation if you’re wrongly asked to put your camera away.
  • The Differences Between Your Eyes and Your Camera – A quick anatomy lesson on how the eyes work in relation to the different camera settings.
  • Photography Lighting Techniques – This article primarily discusses how to work with natural light. There are some great tips and examples!
  • Patti Brown Photoshop Recipe – My favorite texture and overlay artist gives away the secret editing recipe to her portraits’ unique looks. I’ve tried this a couple of times, though I haven’t used it yet and it’s a cool trick!
  • Portraits – A photographer’s first experience shooting portraits.
  • 45 Astonishing Examples of Long Exposure Photography – My father-in-law sent me this link, but I loved looking through the eye candy. My favorite shot is of the lighthouse. Star trails are also always amazing to behold! Long exposures are one example of what cameras can do that eyes cannot!
  • Adventures of Piggie♥GreenTea♥ on Flickr is photographing 365 days of tiny little piggy erasers arranged in hilarious and creative scenes.
  • Lay Baby Lay – A mom is sharing 365 days of breastfeeding. Her efforts are beautiful and touching and I know at the end of the year, she’ll have a collection of photographs she treasures!

The Next Theme Is: Street Photography

Wikipedia describes Street Photography as, “a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places such as streets, parks, beaches, malls, political conventions and other settings.”

I’m not sure if that means a person always has to be in the shot, but for the purpose of this challenge, if you want to call it street photography, I’m going to accept it!

Please add up to five of your submissions to the Friday Finds Flickr Group tagged with dwcff-street to have it display as a thumbnail on my site!
