Friday Finds: Motion

This week’s Friday Finds theme was really fun for me. I got so many great ideas by browsing through all the submissions! There are a lot of different ways to interpret this theme and I saw a variety of techniques used in the photographs I reviewed. Panning and long exposures are two of the more common ones that I definitely want to practice this year! Please be sure to check out the Friday Finds Motion Gallery on Flickr for all 18 photographs I selected to be highlighted.

Photography and Photo Editing Links

Here are some great articles I found this week which will help you with your photography or inspire your creativity!

  • Why You Should (Or Shouldn’t) Abandon Your Flickr Account. The article at Digital Photography School didn’t do much to convince me to abandon my Flickr account. The author’s arguments aren’t very strong. What got me was the comments and reading about an experience of a woman who lost years worth of work when Flickr accidentally deleted her account. That’s right, they have no back-ups, so if someone pushes the wrong button – poof! Your account is gone. Scary! I’m extremely interested in setting up a SmugMug account now. If you use them, I’d love to hear your opinions of them!
  • How ISO and Exposure Affect Noise. Amanda at Everyday Elements writes one of the best explanations of ISO I’ve read. She also illustrates how relying on a photo editing program to correct exposure mistakes can destroy the photo.
  • Abstract Water Images the Easy Way. I don’t have an external flash, but this looks like a relatively easy and fun water photography project.
  • 31 Days to a Better Photo Series. Back in October, Darcy at My 3 Boybarians offered this series and I completely missed it. Once I finish with Faith’s Simplicity class, I am going to dig in deeper to this series!
  • Project 365 Tips and Tricks. Lots more people are participating in Project 365 this year and it makes me kind of regret not trying for it again. These are some great tips to help keep on top of and stay motivated with the project!
  • 5 Reasons to Shoot in Manual Mode. I just found the Click it Up a Notch website and I love it! This is a great article to show you what you can accomplish in manual mode. Anyone can do it!
  • Dealing with Two Light Sources in Photoshop Lightroom. If you don’t have Lightroom, that’s okay because just about any editing software has the ability to do the things described in this article. I really like the tip to bump up the saturation to find and eliminate color casts.
  • One Red Paperclip. This is probably old news, but I just found this site of a guy who traded a paperclip for a house (in 14 trades!) This is an amazing, hilarious story well documented with photographs.
  • Be There and Be Square. A closer look into a square crop and why it works better for some images.
  • Jamie Oliver’s 30 Minute Meals: Is It Really Possible? Chantelle of Fat Mum Slim photographs her experience cooking one of the recipes in Jamie Oliver’s new cookbook and answers the question of whether or not a non-chef can actually execute a meal in 30 minutes.

More Motion Photographs

There were 103 total motion submissions this week! Please take a moment to look through them all in the gallery below!

Next Week’s Theme Is: Diptychs!

City Lights 15-16Simply put, diptychs are two photos in one. I like how they can tell a story, or show a scene from multiple viewpoints. I find it interesting to see what photographs people choose to put together. What can two images say that one just cannot? Please add your submissions to the Friday Finds Flickr Group tagged dwcff-diptych.
