Friday Finds: Diptychs

This week’s photographic theme was diptychs, or two photos side-by-side. To be honest, I wasn’t sure about this theme, but as usually happens I fell in love with it. Some photographs are just meant to be together. Sometimes two photos do say it better than one ever could. I felt a lot of emotion this week and for the first time ever, I was inspired to enter a photograph into the Friday Finds Pool.

When I selected the theme last week, I didn’t realize that diptychs would unintentionally play a role in the Simplicity SLR photography class I’m currently taking. One of our assignments this week revolved around cropping or framing photographs two different ways. We were instructed to put the photos together to submit them and my classmates created some amazing results!

Photography and Photo Editing Links

  • The Principles of Good Photography – This is another one of those articles that touches on the basics of shutter speed, aperture, ISO and composition to create good photographs.
  • Preparing Digital Files in Photoshop for Print – This article is aimed at professional photographers who sell digital prints to their clients, however there are some great tips here for amateurs who want their printed photos to turn out great.
  • Why Do I Do HDR: A Fresh Take on a Tired Debate – Some people hate HDR with a fiery passion and feel it’s a photographic lie. I’ve heard similar arguments against the use of photo editing programs of any kind. This article examines how photographers distort reality every time they push the shutter button.
  • Click Magazine: Winter 2011 – This is the first issue of Clickin’ Moms new magazine! I’m about a quarter of the way through it right now and it’s impressive. Wonderful format and helpful, down-to-earth photography and photo editing articles.
  • Photography Questions…. Answered! Lolli of Better in Bulk compiled links to all her photography tutorials in one post.
  • 4 Reasons Not to Write Off Shooting in Automatic – I haven’t shot in automatic in over a year and this article gave me pause to perhaps think about switching to automatic every once in a while just to see what I get. The article contains some tips about how to use the automatic setting as a learning tool to boost your photography skills. Definitely some food for thought!
  • Inspired Captures – The Crayon Wrangler was inspired by my water shots to try it herself. I really love it when I happen to inspire someone else’s photography!

Video of the Week

Because I spent so much time this week on water shots, I went in search of a good video tutorial to photograph water droplets. What I found is that there ARE no videos on how to get water droplet shots without using external lights and/or flashes. I applaud all my Simplicity SLR classmates who were able to capture great indoor droplet shots with nothing more than their camera and its flash. This video is a nice quick tutorial with a simple setup.

There were an amazing 182 entries to the Flickr group this week, which is my best week yet! Though when there are more submissions, it makes selecting only 18 photos for the gallery even more difficult. Please take a moment to explore both the Friday Finds: Diptych Gallery and the gallery of pool submissions below:

The Next Theme Is: Self-Portraits

i wanna break you downMany of the diptychs I came across this week were amazing self-portraits. What I love most about selfies is that the photographer usually sees themselves in a completely different light than anyone else. I’ve always sucked at taking anything but hand-held self portraits and would love some inspiration. If there’s one thing I know I’ll get out of every Friday Finds, it’s inspiration!

Please join in by submitting up to five of your photos to the Friday Finds Flickr Group and tag them with dwcff-selfies to have it display as a thumbnail on my site.
