Friday Finds: Sky Shots

Happy Friday! What a week it has been! I’ve felt pretty burned out between a photography workshop, 31DBBB, work, family and other responsibilities. (Like, I totally vacuumed the other day!)

I’m glad to be bringing you another edition of Friday Finds though. This week’s theme was Sky Shots. 18 photographs were selected for display in the Sky Shots Flickr Gallery. I wasn’t able to fit them all into this article, so please be sure to visit them and peruse the other submissions at the bottom of this entry! As always, my intention is to showcase others’ work, so if you’re moved by a photograph, please click through and leave a comment for the artist!

Photography and Photo Editing Links

  • Macro Photography on a Budget: Shoot Close-Up Cheaply – The author suggests taking a 50mm prime, turning it backward holding it flush against the lens mount while shooting as a ghetto-macro. She even admits it will be more likely to get dust on your lens and sensor. Yet she makes it seem so easy and fun! I am not brave enough to try this.
  • Photography Tips: Shooting in Full Sun at Any Time of the Day – This is especially poignant for me because my LoveThatShot Blossom Workshop lesson this week is all about using natural light. (I haven’t even fully read through the lesson, let alone start the shots! Hopefully this weekend!) REALLY great tips in this article I am eager to try! Everyone knows how hard shooting in full sun is!
  • ANTILIMIT – This site is the definition of an online photography gallery. That is all it is, yet I can spend hours looking at Eric M. Gustafson’s work.
  • 18 Hilarious Photobombs – My husband, Mark, sent this to me! I think photobombs are my new favorite thing.
  • Bhanu the Killer – Oh my God. A parrot’s gotta eat, bananacide be damned. I found this through StumbleUpon – yeah, I’m liking its recommendations!
  • Mark Jenkins // Street Installations – It’s like a train wreck, you just can’t stop looking at it. Wonderful art and photography of art.
  • Color Correction Using Photoshop – I correct everything to the eye; I am SO bad at color correcting in Photoshop! Partly, because I’m editing on my laptop which can’t truly be calibrated. I need to hold onto this article to read more in-depth the next time I’m editing a photo. (I’m like TWO WEEKS behind in editing my photos…)

Other Cool Stuff Around the Web

  • Are You Publishing Too Soon? – The importance of the draft and editing process. Whenever possible, don’t publish your articles the moment you finish typing them. (Hypocritically, I am going to do exactly that when I’m done this article!)
  • What Your Twitter Numbers Say About You – Which category is closest to your numbers? The Celebrity? The Auto-Follower? The Online Celebrity? (think dooce) I’m with the author, not enough to be The Popular Blogger, but no longer the Tentative Newbie
  • 11 Mistakes and Why Social Media Fails – or – Why Your Blog Is Failing. I see people make the mistakes on this list time and time again and wonder why their audience isn’t growing. Really, even doing just one or two of these mistakes can be detrimental to the success of your blog.
  • 31DBBB – 2 Weeks Down! – An excellent half-way wrap-up for the Problogger 31 Days to Build a Better Blog Challenge! Though I don’t completely agree about the “cool kids” part; that has always been a point of contention among bloggers who were perceived as the “cool kids”.

Not Enough Sky Shot Coolness?

Thanks to all the amazing photographers who submitted their work to the Friday Finds Flickr Pool, there is plenty of sky-licioius goodness for you to take in! Just click on a thumbnail for a larger view and use the arrow navigation to scroll through all the submissions. Also, remember to take a look at the Sky Shot Gallery to see other highlighted submissions I could not fit into this article.

The Next Theme Is: Signs!

I was stumped this week, so I asked my husband and he came up with the suggestions of Signs, which I think will be fun! Please enter your submissions to the Flickr pool by next Friday morning and tag the photograph with dwc-signs if you’d like the thumbnail to display on this site. You can see current submissions and read through the qualification guidelines on the Friday Finds page
