I got my $12 close-up filter set from Amazon a few weeks ago and I haven’t used it all that much. I’m starting to think it might be good at tilt-shift-like effects because of its narrow point of focus. I can tell the quality is deteriorated. Just makes me itch to get a macro or zoom lens.
Some time last week, I took these photos of the pillow on the chair in our play room with the close-up. Not brilliant photography or anything, but kinda cool.
And this one wasn’t taken with the close-up filter, but I thought it looked kind of cool anyway. Usually this milk crate has a bunch of toys in it, but Mr. Serious enjoys dumping it out in the middle of the room and then abandoning it. Sigh.

I don’t like my close up filters and I wonder if they just don’t work with my lenses. I have a 3x and a 10x and my camera hates them.

I got another cheapo filter that was supposed to mimic wide-angle, but it makes no difference (other than degrade quality) on my 50mm lens. Boo. I think there’s only so much these filters can do. They sure don’t take the place of lenses!

That filter gives a pretty cool effect. I am going to look into that one just for something fun to play with.

For $12, I’m not complaining. It’s a fun toy to have in my arsenal. I got a wide angle filter though that cost the same and pretty much did nothing interesting at all for my shots. I think I’ll keep it around until I get another lens to see if the results are different.

Love that milk crate one!! I don’t have any filters– just two lenses. Dying for a macro lens but can’t afford it at the moment, even though the one for my D40 is relatively cheap in terms of lenses!

Oh yeah – I can’t afford a macro lens right now either, which is why I bought the close-up filters. If I had to do it again, I MIGHT spend a bit more (maybe get the close-up filters Scott Kelby recommends, which is about $70)
What do you mean the ONE macro lens for your D40? You should be able to use a plethora of lenses for your Nikon camera as long as it has a Nikon mount. Just wanted to check with you on this because you’re not boxed into getting only one specific lens per type.
I did a lot of lens research at the beginning of the year when my father-in-law offered to buy me a replacement for my broken kit lens. I chose a 50mm, but now it is SO time to add another one. That will need to wait until I can get my youngest’s birth certificate and finally file our tax return. SIGH. (The state of Georgia SUCKS.)

Oh btw, totally butting in…I’ve been a canon-ian since I first started but last weekend my brother just got himself a new Nikon D90 with a micro lens and I am drooling much + seriously thinking to make that cross to the other side to ‘Nikon’ lol

If I ever had a “real” camera I know I would go crazy with a close-up filter. I love these pics!

Interesting. I have never heard of this close up filters. I have definitely heard of a Macro lens and I can’t wait to get one. Someday!

That looks like fun. I only have regular filter and polarized (that I barely use)
