We’ve been letting Mr. Serious jump on the couch. I know this is not the wisest idea, but I let him do it anyway. I remember jumping on the couch as a child and part of me likes to see his excitement. It doesn’t really seem to hurt it, unlike something else he enjoys doing on the couch and love seat: banging his back into it as hard as he can. That I do try to discourage. I don’t really know where exactly I draw the line in furniture abuse.
I used gasp the flash.
I think this is the first time all year I’ve used a flash on my project 365 shots. Generally, I am not at all a fan of on-camera flash, though I feel it can be used well for filler light outside sometimes. I don’t have the money for any other sort of lighting option, so I use natural and inside light as much as I can in my photography.
In the end, I kind of like the effect the flash gave this shot. I don’t remember what action or texture I applied to it, but the style reminds me of a photo from my childhood.
My mom got me a rose bush (or whatever?) for Mother’s Day. I wrote that the first time I took it outside, all the flowers fell off of it and we thought it may have died. We replanted it and before long, buds started developing again. Now it has at least 10 blooms! How wonderful. I know nothing about roses, so perhaps I should learn before winter comes or I otherwise kill it.
Does anyone have any fun photographic plans for the 4th of July or this weekend? How do you feel about using the on-camera flash? Do you have any good tips for using it or working with low light to avoid it?

Interesting perspective! Is that from
your garden? They are sooo pretty
@Butterflysnbees – Yes, this is the rose bush my mom bought me for Mother’s Day! It is thriving!
How come we’ve never connected through Flickr before!!!? I didn’t know you were over here and even admin a group!
Love it! And wow is he getting big!
Hi Lynda! Oh my goodness, your blog is FANTASTIC! I checked out your ‘be inspired’ page – wow, thanks so much for adding me! I sooo hope to see you for touch-up Tuesday next week.
I can’t wait to look at your blog more in detail when I get home. Right now we’re at my parents cabin and it takes forever to load a page on their computer…ahhhh!!! Great to e-meet you, and I can’t wait to check out your blog next week when we get back!

Thank you Karli! I will most assuredly be by for next week’s touch-up Tuesday!
@lynda I avoid flash at all costs. Prefer ISO. If I must, I use a filter
@cassiethedoula what filter would you use for low light?
@lynda sorry, not filter. Diffuser. (I’m distracted lol. Sorry). I have a cheap. $15.00 diffuser. Works great
When I bought my 7D I thought that one of the bonuses was to have the occasional use of onboard flash. I don’t know what it is that I do wrong but I’m yet to have a good result, usually getting something out of focus and well under exposed. I far prefer my speedlite with a demb flash diffuser. I guess it’s about figuring out what you can work with and what you like.

Most of the time you can set your flash level too so it doesn’t flash as bright, or flashes brighter.
I’ve just found that 99% of the time it’s not worth bothering with on-camera flash.
Thank you so much for pointing out my home page was redirecting to the textures page! My redirection plugin has a bug that does that and I totally forgot about it when I published that page last night!
Flash – boo! Although, I do think I should be using more outside for filling rather than relying on Photoshop to fix it later.
The roses are lovely!

Desert Greetings my fellow SITStah,
Like many photogs I avoid using Flash whenever possible. I will admit to using it last week though when my son and his friend were swimming at night. Thanks to the flash I was able to capture a few great shots.
Professional though, I prefer to use natural lighting whenever possible.
And I love roses. Whenever you need some help, give me a holler. I have grown roses from clippings trashed at the Rose Parade.
This weekend I will be trying out a new technique for photographing Fireworks that was in Popular Photography magazine.
Have a wonderfully safe holiday.

Thank you so much for visiting and commenting Patty! I am also in awe of your green thumb! I’m surprised we’ve been able to even keep a plant alive.
I can’t wait to see the results of your trials! Hope you post them!

I will be sure to post the fireworks next week. A really easy plant for indoors are spider plants. And they produce babies so you can keep creating new planters. And the best thing is that they help clean the air inside your house.

I’m not a fan of on board flashes – but there is a device you can get that is under $30 called a light scoop – http://www.lightscoop.com/ – one of my friends uses it with her rebel and it is a great and cheap way to diffuse the light.
LOVE the seventies feel of the first shot! Every kid needs to be able to jump on the couch (or bed) at some point in his life.
I try not to use flash unless it’s absolutely necessary. More often than not, though, it’s an issue with me holding the camera still. My fingers jitter and the camera shakes.

We used to jump on our couches and I don’t see any harm in it. Of course, my husband would probably shoot me if I do that with our kids (but he’s anal like that). You mentioned that you used your flash but it doesn’t look harsh so you’ve used it well. Nice work.
