Building a Better Blog is hosting a Photo Improvement Contest and I thought this would be an excellent chance to play more with the Kaleidoscope textures without having to go and shoot. Hopefully I’ll get my submission entered in time; it was a woefully short entry period of just two days!
The challenge is to simply improve this photo:
I played around a lot and don’t remember what I wound up applying, but here is my result:
What do you think?
Update: @windwardskies suggested less yellow and a square crop. All I have to edit with at the moment is Picnik so this will have to do.
This photo editing business is a fine art. I’m sure it will take me quite some time with these new tools to hone my skills. Another great thing about Patti’s products is that she offers a number of screencast tutorials. Some of which are very beneficial without even using her textures!

I guess it depends what you’re going for. I think the altered photo might fit in nicely in a bigger piece with other elements. Just looking at the photos and asking myself which one I would like to keep looking at, I actually prefer the unaltered one.

Cool. It’s definitely all about personal taste.
@lynda the editing looks good, a touch yellow but it’s fine. I’d do a square crop to get rid of the background clutter though.
@windwardskies Great tips! Thank you!
Hmmm… the altered photo is too yellow for my taste. I think it’s cool you’re trying out new things though.

Thanks. I really appreciate the feedback. I’m not in love with it myself. I do find it a bit hard to edit photos when I haven’t seen the scene (haha) played out through my own eyes.
It’s fun to experiment even when the results are less than spectacular.
