This week’s Digital Photography School assignment (05/12-05/26) is Fences. I was excited for this simply because I knew it’d be easy enough for me to participate; I have a fence in my own back yard! (This may not seem like a big thing to you, but I haven’t had a fence in my backyard since I was 14.)
I lucked out in the morning as Mark took the boys outside to replant some flowers he bought last week. By the time I got outside with my camera, Noah had crawled across the yard to the fence. He was sitting beside it, eating grass and playing with sticks. Have I mentioned lately how much I love having a yard? I regret not renting a house from the time we had Elias because the whole family benefits greatly by having a nice space outdoors to call our own.
I wasn’t too happy with any of the actual photos of just the fence. It’s not a very attractive fence though and the only thing interesting about it is that it leans inward quite a bit.
I took a couple of playful shots from the perspective of the grass that I’m really happy with.
The photograph I decided to submit was one of Noah in front of the fence where he looks like he’s meditating. I like how his bald head pops against the fence. I also like the texture of the fence converted to black and white. I don’t particularly care for the way the grass turned out in this shot though. Perhaps a lower perspective would have improved the results. I also submitted this photo to Beyond Megapixels May Photo Challenge, which was B&W portrait (even though this shot is actually landscape presentation so I’m not sure it technically qualifies.)
Overall, it was a productive and fun photo shoot! Next week’s theme at the DPS forums is “Spice”. Maybe we’ll make a new spicy dish and I can photograph the ingredients. As long as there’s ample light, that’s always fun with the 50mm. I’m excited to take part in more photography assignments.
You have until 5/26 to submit an entry for Fences if you’d like to participate. If you enter or if you’re just inspired by the assignment and want to share your fence photographs, please let me know in the comments!

@lynda Hi Lynda. Not HDR but I have merged two photos together to get the foreground and background the way I wanted them to be
