Mark and I actually got a little bit accomplished this weekend! As we haven’t used it in about two weeks, we retired the swing and it is now stored in our walk in closet. I am a little sad to see it go, just because. We moved the exersaucer to the spot the swing used to be and it opened up the living room nicely. Elias likes the exersaucer in its new spot because it’s closer to us (though I’m usually on the floor next to him when he’s in it anyway.) He can also see the TV, which he likes.
I know the TV is pretty controversial for a baby, but I don’t really get the big deal. He has lots of toys that light up and make sound… I don’t fully get what the difference is. We do have the TV on quite a bit, but it’s always tuned to educational channels before 8pm. We live off Discovery, TLC, The Science Channel, HGTV and Food Network and rarely stray from those channels with the exception of night time shows (which he never sees), Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy (which he’s sometimes awake for). I think the TV can be a pretty fabulous teaching tool. I think the same thing of a computer though and will have no hesitation to let Elias use a computer (with supervision) as soon as he’s capable. Then again, I am addicted to both the TV and computer, so maybe I’m not the best judge of use for either of these.
Elias was in a fabulous mood on Saturday and we played and laughed the day away. That night, he was so stuffed up that he had a lot of problems sleeping. He didn’t get a lot of sleep that night, which caused him to be rather cranky and tired all day yesterday, which was somewhat unfortunate as my mom came over. We think he’s still teething on top of that because he keeps putting his fingers to the back of his mouth. For the past several months, he only puts his fingers in his mouth so often when he’s teething. I gave him some Tylenol yesterday morning and before long his mood improved exponentially. He had a nap from about 1:30-4:00pm to make up for lost sleep the night before. He was tired and cranky again by 6pm, but we were able to hold his bedtime off until 7pm. He slept pretty well until around 4am when he was stuffed up again. I held him upright for a few minutes and then he was able to continue sleeping until 6am. I don’t think he really wanted to get up then, but after his bottle he was in pretty good spirits.
I want to get Elias some sort of “activity” toy that we can easily take to Texas with us and has lots of different features on it for him to figure out. I’m having a hard time deciding on one though. I don’t want to take a lot of different toys and books with us to Texas, but I also don’t want him to get bored. I’m not sure if I ever mentioned it, but we did get a seat for him on the plane, so that means an extra checked bag! I need to start thinking about packing now. As we normally drive to Texas, we take pretty much whatever we want to take and despite our best intentions to pack light, we usually wind up filling the car completely. In December, I took ALL of Elias’ clothes with us – a full suitcase worth of clothes. He didn’t wear a fraction of them. I think we’ll easily be able to fit clothes for all three of us in one suitcase. If anyone wants to throw me any tips for traveling with a 9 month old, I’d be happy to accept it.
As is usual, I’ve been working on this entry for hours and still haven’t said much, so I’m just going to post it. I hope everyone has a wonderful Monday!
