Eye Makeup

I’m thinking I need to start experimenting with eye makeup. My mom rarely wore makeup and I had no exposure to women who did as a child. I experimented somewhat as a teenager, but I wasn’t really interested in makeup then. I’m still not interested in makeup, but I do like wearing it as I think it makes me look better.

This woman is more talented than I could ever hope to be. (I hope she’s looking into it as a career or something; it’s an artform!)

I’ve heard a lot of good things about MAC Cosmetics. I think maybe one of these days I’ll go to one of those makeup counters at an upscale department store to see what they can do with me (or convince me to buy, anyway).

Wow, you and I are on the same wavelength – I’ve been thinking I need to spruce up, and all of my makeup is very, very old. Here’s an Ask Mefi thread that might be helpful – it boils down to “get thee to a Sephora.” There’s also a virtual makeover tool on the Mary Kay site that gave me a really good idea of what colors look like together – marykay.com, of course.

I’ve never liked make up, and if I do wear it, I’ve always gone for the “less is more” look; a little face powder, some blush, and a hint of color over the eyes can go a LONG way to change a look.

I totally recommend MAC. I was like you, my mother rarely wore makeup and I never really learned what I was doing (not that it stopped me, although it probably should have!). When I was in my early 20s and had money in my pocket, I went to a MAC counter.

She used grey shades because I liked the way that color looked but I told her I always kind of ended up looking like I got whacked in the eyes when I tried it. Then she showed me how to put them on properly. I ended up buying about $75 worth of stuff but I didn’t have to – they didn’t pressure me at all, I just liked it that much.

One thing I liked was she showed me how to use an angled brush to put eyeshadow on as eyeliner. To this day I still have the brush. I couldn’t afford to buy their stuff now, but the technique works even with cheaper stuff.

It’s worth dropping by though just to get the lesson. I’ve never forgotten what she taught me to do.

Man, I loved the eye pictures.
I don’t wear makeup either. I keep making it my new year’s resolution to wear at least mascara daily, but like all new year’s resolutions…..

I like the less-is-more look too. At minimum, I like some tinted moisturizer or foundation of some sort to even out my skin tone and some mascara so I don’t look like I just had a kitchen accident which burned off my eyelashes.

But still, I really envy the way the eye makeup is applied in my first link and I would LOVE to learn how to do something like that for special occasions or just when I feel like looking trashy. :)

A couple years ago I decided I was going to wear makeup every day to work come what may. Since then, I’ve skipped wearing makeup to work exactly once. Now, I think I’d be too embarrassed to go into work without makeup. As mentioned above, I never really try to look like I have makeup on, but I feel incredibly unpolished without it.

Another non-makeup person here. But I have a dear friend who is a real expert. She loves and promotes MAC, mostly because their vivid colours go a long way if you use it daily for subtle colours. They also have an eyeshadow case recycling program, so if you bring in three cases you get a new colour free.

She works in a drug store and also likes to mix and match. Most of her collection is MAC, Body Shop and Quo (Shopper’s Drug Mart house brand- prolly only avaliable in Canada). She also thinks that anyone putting make up on their face owes it to themselves to have some decent brushes. She swears by the MAC and Quo line up.

Also, don’t feel bad about going for the make over and not spending a lot of money. A couple of the basics will still appease them, but who am I to say!?

I’ve never been one for makeup, either. I always buy something when I go down the aisle, even though I know it’ll sit around for months. It takes me forever to put something on, and lately, I’m so tired when I get home that I’d either forget or not bother taking it off.

I’ve also heard good things about MAC, too. Let me know how your visit goes.

I’m not one for makeup at all, but on the rare occasions that I do wear it, I use Clinique because it’s hypoallergenic (sp?). I have uber sensitive skin (no idea if that’s an issue for you or not). If skin sensitivity is an issue, I would highly recommend Clinique though; they have good stuff. =)

Thanks for the link. Looks like askme has lots of makeup questions.

I have never heard of a Sephora before now. I was confident they wouldn’t have any stores near me, but lo and behold, two malls close to me have them!

If I tipped them, would it be wrong of me to go to various different places to get free makeovers? lol. :)
