Organization Woes

I really think I’ll be lucky if I don’t wind up gaining weight this week. Yesterday, my caloric intake included: coffee creamer (≈60 calories), a hot dog (≈350 calories), a piece of german chocolate cake (≈270 calories) and some honey nut cheerios (≈200 calories). All tolled, I probably consumed around 880-900 calories and 38-40 grams of fat. That’s a terrible calorie-to-fat ratio and I didn’t eat much of anything nutritious at all.

I don’t know what we’re going to eat tonight. We have a very hard time sticking to a schedule of grocery shopping, which is our primary problem. My goal is to clean out the fridge by Saturday morning and then Mark and I can go to Whole Foods Saturday night or Sunday morning. I’ve had the goal of cleaning out the pantry for several weeks and stocking it with supplies we’ll actually use, but I don’t know when I’ll ever get around to it. Maybe I’ll start on that a bit tonight and let Mark have some computer time.

I really wish I could quit my job to stay home and take care of household stuff that gets ignored because both of us are too beat after working a week to get to it. I do not know how to clean well, but I do enjoy cleaning and organizing. A clean, organized space improves my mood ten-fold and it gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Here’s a list of things we need to take care of before the new year. I’ll try to remember to check back on this entry then to see if we’ve done any of it:

  • Organize the pantry (cabinets)
  • Clean and organize the study
  • Clean and organize the walk-in-closet
  • Clean and organize the dining area

I don’t know, written out it doesn’t look so bad, but with the exception of the dining area we’ve let all these areas slip and it’s now affecting the way we live our life. We filled our closet and study with junk we’ll never again use and we have nowhere to put anything else.

I love being organized, but I have a hard time doing it. For example, I would love to have an easy-to-maintain recipe binder we could keep in the kitchen with all the recipes we try and like. It sounds easy enough to do, but I can’t seem to be able to get started on it. Instead, all the recipes we frequently use are pinned up on the side of the fridge. Over time, the stack of paper became so big we needed to add more and stronger magnets to keep the papers from slipping.

Bah. I’ve been sitting on this entry for a few hours now and can’t think of anything else to add, so I’ll just go ahead and post it. If I think of something more entertaining, it will be in tomorrow’s entry.

Lynda, have you ever gone to ? In their memories, they have a TON of helpful hints, for organizing just about anything you can think of…and on their profile page, they link to a few very helpful websites.

Thanks! I’ve never heard of that group.

I love that you have journal archives going so far back. I’ve saved my LJ entries to 2001, but I really didn’t think about keeping an online journal until after Nemo was born. I wish I had kept one during my pregnancy, at the least!

See, here’s the thing – each one of those four items probably has 20-30 things within it that need to get done in order for the room/area to be organized – that’s why the small list feels so big! :) And it’s not you – keeping the binder is work (that’s my job, and I only add recipes every month or so).
